How Plastics Waste Recycling could transform the Chemical Industry

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jan 29, 2019 | McKinsey&Company, Thomas Hundertmark, Mirjam Mayer, Chris McNally et al

Dealing with plastic waste is becoming a condition for the industry to retain its license to operate. It could develop into a new business opportunity, generating $60 billion for the petrochemicals and plastics sector - nearly two-thirds of its possible profit-pool growth to 2030.  In this article for McKinsey&Company, Thomas Hundertmark, Mirjam Mayer, Chris McNally et al outline a scenario for the plastics industry through which 50 percent of plastics worldwide could be reused or recycled by 2030 - a fourfold increase over the  current level. They discuss the support needed across society, from regulators, plastics users like consumer-packaged-goods companies, and from consumers, to achieve this outcome.
