Patching Our Digital Future Is Unsustainable and Dangerous
Cybercrime is growing at 26 percent per year and is it estimated that it will cost the global economy at least US$2.1 trillion, two percent of global GDP, in 2019. National cyber security strategies, no matter how comprehensive, will fail unless clear lines of accountability are drawn, allocating security obligations to relevant parties. In her paper for the
Center for International Governance Innovation, Melissa Hathaway calls for comprehensive, methodical assessments of cyber risk at the national level to identify the greatest areas of vulnerability and address gaps in defensive strategies. The risks of novel technologies should be assessed along with the benefits they may bring. Only then will it be possible to control the vulnerabilities of the digital future.
