Subject and Object: Europe and the Emerging Great-power Competition

Improving global governance
Jun 05, 2019 | Elcano Royal Institute, Luis Simón

The geopolitical change underway raises questions on how the EU should position itself in Sino-US competition, how the EU should deal with an increasingly assertive Russia, whether the EU should associate more closely with the US in competing with China, or opt to become an autonomous actor. In this Expert Comment for the Elcano Royal Institute, Luis Simón suggests that Europeans should continue to lever their economic, technological and security cooperation to mitigate dependence on an Asia-bound U.S.. But, the key question for Europe is not whether it will be subject or object, but it will address the reality of being both at the same time.
