Privacy is the New Wilderness We Must Protect

Sharing core norms and values
Aug 13, 2019 | Global Policy , Maciej Ceglowski

In this article for the Global Policy journal, Maciej Ceglowski argues that ambient privacy plays a key role in civic life. When all discussion takes place under the eye of software - in a for-profit medium like Google or Facebook working to shape the participants’ behavior - it may not be possible to create the shared sense of reality that is essential for self-government. He warns that in that event, the move away from ambient privacy will be an irreversible change, because it will remove the public’s ability to function as a democracy.
