Jan 12, 2020 | Institute of Development Studies,

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) excites academic and policy debate on its definition and its contribution to the achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. In this publication by the Institute of Development Studies, experts from China and BRI countries look at the opportunities and challenges of aligning the BRI and the SDGs frameworks at local, national, and international levels to achieve sustainable development. The impact of China’s promotion of a Digital Silk Road on the SDGs, is explored, and several crosscutting lessons emerge. Both BRI and SDG investments and practices are varied, and whether or not alignment or contradictions emerge, depends on the issues in question.
