Enhancing Access to Opportunities

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jul 09, 2020 | International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately hurt disadvantaged groups, leaving uneven access to opportunities and persistent income gaps in many economies. In this joint publication, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WB) emphasise the need to ensure that higher inequality due to the epidemic does not become permanent. To foster a durable and inclusive recovery, we must level the playing field across age and gender. A focus on health, early childhood development, and education is essential, as is the enhancement of access to financial services and technology. Reforms to strengthen competition, especially in sectors that matter for poorer population segments, would promote long-term productivity and stronger growth.
