Amid National Reckoning, Americans Divided on Whether Increased Focus on Race Will Lead to Major Policy Change

Sharing core norms and values

Many Americans are sceptical that the present racial controversies will lead to major changes. According to a this Pew Research Center survey, the public is about evenly split on whether the increased focus on race and racial inequality since mid-2020 will lead to policy changes to address racial inequality (48 percent say it will, and 51 percent say it will not). Partisan gaps on race are wide and persistent, even after taking the racial composition of the parties into account. Whether looking at the treatment of Black adults relative to White adults, the amount of attention paid to racial issues in this country or the importance of this moment, Democrats and Republicans have vastly different views.
