China’s Vision 2035: From Beijing’s Forbidden City to Interconnected Eurasian Megacity

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Apr 11, 2021 | Dezan Shira and Associates, Bob Savic

At the heart of Beijing’s Imperial City lies the Forbidden City palace complex.  Home to China’s celestial emperors, its grounds were off-limits to ordinary mortals. In this China Briefing of Dezan Shira and Associates, Bob Savic discusses the vision of Chinese leaders of Beijing assuming a modern, outward-oriented role. They envisage not only the capital embracing other surrounding lower-tier Chinese cities to form a megacity cluster, but also creating five “super-cities” across China - the Greater Bay Area, Yangtze River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the mid-Yangtze River area, and the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration. The purpose is to link these to countries and regions across the Eurasian supercontinent and beyond.
