The History of the End of Poverty has Just Begun

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Jan 16, 2022 | Our World in Data, Max Roser

Comparisons of price levels across countries reveal that 85 percent of the world population live below a poverty line defined as $30 per day. In this visualization by Our World in Data, Max Roser shows where they live. Using the $30 a day threshold as a definition for ‘poverty’, he shows that only in high-income countries does not nearly everyone live in poverty. The data also reveals that a significant share of the population lives in poverty, thus defined, in all countries. As no country, not even the richest countries, has eliminated poverty entirely, he suggests that there are no fully ‘developed’ countries. Work is required by all.
