Three Misunderstandings about China’s Policy towards Taiwan

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Aug 10, 2022 | Clingendael Spectator

There are several harmful misunderstandings about China’s policy on Taiwan that stand in the way of rational policymaking. In this article for the Clingendael Spectator, Xiaoxue Martin discusses three key misunderstandings. She suggests first, that military pressure is not the sign of a trigger-happy China, but an instrument that Beijing employs to maintain the ‘One China Principle’ to deter Taiwan from proclaiming independence; second, that although there is little room for public debate on the Chinese Communist Party’s position on the fundamental elements of Taiwan policy, there are different views on cross-Strait relations; and third, that the costs of an invasion  of Taiwan are incredibly high regardless of the military capacity of the PRC, making it a risky option of last resort.
