World affairs, diplomacy and trade are no longer solely the domain of nation-states, as cities are growing exponentially and some now have greater GDP’s than countries. Subnational governments and cities playing a growing role in the international arena, not least because two thirds of people will live in cities by 2050. Where nation-states are by nature competitive, independent and defined by rigid borders, cities tend to be co-operative and open and recognise interdependence and shared interests. In an interview with the Global Policy journal, Cara Stauß, the representative of Baden-Württemberg to the European Union, explores the role regions and cities can play addressing global challenges.
