Poverty Data Never Tells the Whole Story
Over the past 30 years, more than one billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty, yet poverty is on the rise, with no signs of slowing down, in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Using Singapore as an example, Clayton Christensen, Efosa Ojomo and Karen Dillon suggest that countries that focus on creating prosperity and not only on eradicating poverty react differently to data on poverty. In their article for
Global Policy, they show how, instead of only building schools, Singapore prioritised investments and innovation and attracted companies that created jobs, thereby increasing the demand for education. This virtuous circle caused the poverty level to drop to one of the lowest in the world.
