Understanding the Relationship between Poverty and Inequality – Overview Report
The realisation that poverty and inequality are inextricably linked has led to international organisations setting joint inequality-poverty reduction targets. However, the evidence base is relatively weak as only limited information is available on the relationship between the two. The
Center for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) has worked with the
LSE's International Inequalities Institute in a three-year research programme, the results of which are reflected in this report that examines philosophical concerns for poverty and inequality; estimates the empirical relationship between income inequality and several poverty measures; reviews the evidence base on potential mechanisms that may drive any relationship; and discusses policy options.
