How Social Protection Programmes Can Improve Early Childhood Development

Living in poverty can undermine the biological and cognitive development of young children. Economic strengthening may counteract this and can break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and improve the future for children, their families, and their country. In this Policy Brief, the Institute for Development Studies outlines how graduation programmes aimed at mothers as the main supporters of children, offer a ‘double boon by improving early childhood development (ECD) in the short term and reducing poverty in the long run.
