EU- UN Cooperation: Confronting Change in the Multi-lateral System

Improving global governance
Oct 05, 2019 | ECDPM, Alfonso Medinilla, Pauline Veron, Vera Mazzara

The multilateral system, with the UN at its core, is under pressure from within. The EU has maintained a stable presence in the UN, but is faced with fragmentation which weakens its ability to defend its agenda for a rules-based multilateral system. Although the EU and its member states contribute the largest aggregate sum to the UN system, the EU struggles to leverage its funding for the UN for greater influence and cooperation. In this ECDPM discussion paper, Alfonso Medinilla, Pauline Veron and Vera Mazzara examine opportunities for deepening EU-UN cooperation in light of the 2019 reform of the UN’s development system, taking into account the EU’s evolving global role.
