Banking on Asia – Alignment with the Paris Agreement at Six Development Finance Institutions in Asia

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Nov 11, 2019 | E3G, Sonia Dunlop, James Hawkins, Kate Levick et al

The Asia-Pacific region is at the centre of megatrends reshaping the global economy.  The states of the region face critical choices on investments to meet the demands of young and rapidly urbanising populations, and how to address the scourge of air pollution and climate change. In this article for the E3G climate change think tank, Sonia Dunlop, James Hawkins, Kate Levick et al find that none of the six key development finance institutions in Asia are fully aligned with the Paris Agreement across all ten indicators. Assessing progress in climate action, including mitigation and adaptation, climate risk, and greenhouse gas accounting, the authors reveal the region’s slow alignment of its financial flows with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
