The Intelligent Corporation – Data and the Digital Economy

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jan 28, 2020 | Transnational Institute, Anita Gurumurthy, Nandini Chami

The current phase in capitalism is marked by extreme market concentration, unprecedented inequality in wealth and a declining share of labour in global income. It coincides with the rise of platform capitalism and the intelligent corporation. In their essay for the Transnational Institute, Anita Gurumurthy and Nandini Chami suggest that this new phase of capitalism has spawned the intelligence economy. ‘Intelligencification’ makes plausible a planetary-scale commodification of everyday life by the new corporation in ways previously impossible. Both nature and caring bodies are trapped in a planetary enclosure as everything and everybody can be turned into data. The power of the intelligent corporation must be contained. A new perspective on the governance of data must be explored to permit an emancipatory future for all.
