The Price of Primacy - Why America Shouldn’t Dominate the World

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Feb 19, 2020 | Foreign Affairs, Stephen Wertheim

Over three decades, the United States has extended its military deployments and commitments, but failing to provide for the global common good. Stephen Wertheim argues in this article for Foreign Affairs that poor stewardship of globalization has caused the share of income accruing to the wealthiest one percent of the world’s population to climb steadily, and that of the bottom 50 percent to stagnate. He suggests that the time has come to end the unipolar moment. To correct its course, the US should consciously pull back militarily to build a world that is habitable, governable, and prosperous.  This is a task for grand strategy in the broadest sense.
