Rewiring Support to African Continental and Regional Organisations
In their paper for the
European Center for Development Policy, Jan Vanheukelom, Bruce Byiers and Alfonso Medinilla discuss the complexity of regional integration - in terms of actors, interests and power relations, between and within countries - and the need for external actors to understand and address these dynamics. This understanding is core to EU efforts to engage with their African counterparts, whether through the African Union, Regional Economic Commissions, or bilaterally. The paper draws on a recent ECDPM research project on the political economy of regional integration in Africa. The issues discussed there are still valid, although the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the focus from aspirational agendas to containment of infection and economic revival.
