The Multitier Battle against Chinese 5G Dominance

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 09, 2020 | Hudson Institute, Thomas Duesterberg

In recent years, Chinese firms, led by Huawei and ZTE, have moved aggressively to win acceptance of their 5G standards, based on their own patents. Thomas Duesterberg suggests in this article for the Hudson Institute that the quantity of patent applications and from Huawei and ZTE outweighs those of non-Chinese corporates and is used to justify adoption of new Chinese standards in the international standards organizations (ISOs) although the Huawei and ZTE patents are not of the quality that might be expected. He asserts that Chinese technology companies are sending large numbers of engineers to the ISOs, to engage in bloc voting in standards meetings, coordinated in some cases by Chinese Communist Party officials. These tactics reinforce China’s drive to establish standards for 5G systems and related products that favour their domestic producers.
