A World in Turmoil needs Fundamental Change

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Sep 19, 2020 | Spotlight Report on Sustainable Development 2020, Jens Martins

The implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals are at risk in many countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this extract from the Spotlight Report on Sustainable Development 2020, Jens Martins points out that even before the pandemic many countries - especially in the global South - were in economic crisis, with contractionary fiscal policy and growing debt that made them vulnerable to future crises. This he ascribes to a dysfunctional system that puts corporate profit above the rights and well-being of people and planet. He suggests that structural changes are needed in societies and economies to ensure the primacy of human rights, gender justice and sustainability. The main message of the old development paradigm, that countries need to get richer, is no longer sustainable, as it has outlived its purpose.
