Ten Things to know about Misinformation and Disinformation

In recent years, major democracies have had to investigate foreign interference in their digital information ecosystems. Also, whether by accident or design, the internet and social media have created conditions favourable for a huge increase in false information and conspiracy theories. This can cause real harm, especially because digital literacy and policy are unable to keep up with the pace of change. Fact-checking organisations are emerging, and major media organisations have reporters tracking and exposing misinformation and disinformation. In this ODI briefing note, Jonathan Tanner outlines ten things the public should know about misinformation and disinformation and how they can be managed.
