How Xi Just Saved the World - In a little-noticed Speech, China permanently changed the Global Fight against Climate Change

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Sep 29, 2020 | Foreign Policy, Adam Tooze

Global warming is produced not only by the annual flows of carbon but by the stocks that have accumulated in the Earth’s atmosphere. At about 28 percent of the global total, the carbon dioxide produced in China is about as much as that produced by the United States, European Union, and India combined. In his speech to the UN General Assembly on Sept. 22, 2020, Xi Jinping may have redefined the future prospects for humanity. Adam Tooze notes in this article for Foreign Policy that if fully implemented, China’s new commitment will by itself lower the projected temperature increase by 0.2-0.3 degrees Celsius. It would be the largest favorable shock to climate models to date.
