The True North, Strong and Ice-Free – An Update

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Nov 27, 2020 | GLOBE-Net, Ken White

The increasingly warmer climate will increase maritime traffic in the Arctic as the melting ice results in more navigable waters. Shorter northern sea routes require less fuel, and thus deliver lower CO2 emissions from ships carrying heavier loads, operating at slower speeds due to harsh Arctic water conditions. In this article for GLOBE-Net, Ken White discusses advantages and drawbacks of the opening of Arctic sea routes, including the effects on the precarious natural economy and the potential economic benefits from resource extraction, construction, and Arctic tourism. He discusses the perils of ensuring access to the Arctic’s sub-sea bounty, protecting national sovereign rights (especially Canadian), and ensuring the safety of seaborne commerce.
