While many people are now enjoying longer, healthier lives, current retirement ages pose challenges for both policymakers and retirees. In this article, published by the International Institute for Applied System Analysis, Daniela Weber and Elke Loichinger investigate whether it is possible to increase the retirement age. While they find large differences across countries, there is potential, overall, to increase the expected number of economically active years for men and women between the ages of 60 and 69. However, their education-specific analysis reveals large differences between socioeconomic subgroups when it comes to the size of this potential.
