Conquering the Great Divide

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jan 27, 2021 | IMf, Joseph Stiglitz

The COVID-19 pandemic will not be controlled until it is controlled everywhere, and the economic downturn will not be tamed until there is a robust global recovery, warns Joseph Stiglitz in this article for the IMF. Unless there is a greater global and national solidarity, the pandemic will persist longer than it otherwise would, global inequalities will grow, and there will be global divergence.  Having already revealed enormous cleavages between states, the pandemic is likely to increase disparities, leaving long-lasting scars. The author suggests that as a matter of self-interest and humanitarian concern, the developed economies must provide the assistance the developing economies and emerging markets need; the rules governing globalization must do more than just serve corporate interests; and labour legislation must improve worker protection and provide greater scope for collective action.
