Global Poverty in an Unequal World: Who is considered poor in a rich country? And what does this mean for our Understanding of Global Poverty?

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Mar 09, 2021 | Our World in Data, Max Roser

The financial status of every person depends on the average income in the country they live in and the position that person has in that country’s income distribution. The extremely low poverty line that the UN relies on, draws attention to the very poorest people in the world. But Max Roser argues in this article for Our World in Data that it ignores the 90 percent of the world population who live above the extreme poverty threshold. He discusses what global poverty would look like if the notions of poverty that are common in the world’s rich countries – like Denmark, the US, or Germany - were employed, and what the aspirations for the future of global poverty reduction might then be.
