Five Opportunities of a Circular Economy

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Mar 16, 2021 | World Resources Institute, David McGinty

The devastating effects of rampant consumption for humans, wildlife and the planet show the urgency of a shift from linear, use-it-up-and-throw-it-away models to a circular economy. The circular economy offers a $4.5 trillion economic opportunity by reducing waste, stimulating innovation and creating employment. David McGinty argues in this blog for the World Resources Institute that for natural systems to regenerate, waste and pollution must be designed out, and products and materials kept in use for longer. He proposes an Action Agenda, showing five opportunities: make better use of finite resources; reduce emissions, protect human health and biodiversity; boost economies; and create more and better jobs. Realizing these benefits will require action by governments, businesses, civil society, finance institutions, and research organizations.
