Facing Forward: Schooling for Learning in Africa

Sharing core norms and values
Mar 24, 2021 | World Bank, Sajitha Bashir, Marlaine Lockheed et al

This World Bank publication lays out a range of policy and implementation actions for countries in sub-Saharan Africa to meet the challenge of improving learning while expanding access to, and completion of, basic education for all. Sajitha Bashir, Marlaine Lockheed et al discuss findings on what affects children's learning, access to schooling, and progress through basic education. They identify four areas to help countries better align their systems to improve learning: completing quality universal basic education; ensuring effective management and support of teachers; targeting spending priorities and budgets on achieving higher quality; and closing the institutional capacity gap. They also assess how future educational progress may be affected by fertility rates and economic growth.
