Multilateralism Needs Democracy

Improving global governance
Apr 18, 2021 | PeaceLab, Thorsten Benner

Many global challenges require a universal multilateral policy response. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has generated a new “multilateral momentum”, a universal multilateralism compatible with the 21st century is yet to be devised. Thorsten Benner suggests in the article by PeaceLab that by working together, democracies can strengthen multilateral organizations that bring together democracies, deter authoritarian political and economic coercion, and promote universal values and norms in bodies with universal membership. He argues that individuals from many different countries - including from outside the West - co-shaped the UN human rights regime. Investing in credibility, mutual support and in branching out to include India, South Korea and Australia in a D-10 format of the world’s ten biggest democracies to complement the G-7, should be a first step.
