China’s Communist Century: An Ongoing Balancing Act

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jun 13, 2021 | Chatham House, Yu Jie

China’s foreign policy mixes powerful rhetoric with pragmatism and past grievances. There is a strong feeling that China does not get the respect it deserves from the international community, and that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can make China ‘stand tall and big’. Yu Jie suggests in this article for Chatham House that China’s historical humiliations and staggering recent economic success could lead to further deterioration of its relations with other countries. The CCP is still finding its way and quite often chooses a path of least resistance without an historical precedent. Ultimately, its future will be decided by the 1.4 billion Chinese people who expect a better life well before 2049.
