Smart Gap Widening

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Aug 23, 2021 | China Daily, Lu Chuanying

A new type of digital divide is growing, which, if not addressed, will not only limit the spread of digital technology and the digital economy, but also trigger more social problems, argues Lu Chuanying in this China Daily column. As a new round of scientific and technological revolutions emerges, defined by technological breakthroughs like 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain and quantum science and technology, there is a risk of this triggering a new type of digital divide, affecting a wider range of areas to a greater degree and with more far-reaching significance. The concept of digital technology for social good should be advocated and used as a norm to prevent monopolies, inequality, and unfairness being created by technological breakthroughs.
