The ‘Zoomification’ of Academia: Addressing Risks to Academic Freedom

Sharing core norms and values
Sep 17, 2021 | Global Public Policy Institute, Thorsten Benner, Victor Brechenmacher

The COVID-19 pandemic has made online learning a key part of university life. Platforms like Zoom have prevented academic life from grinding to a halt, but they also allow for surveillance by authoritarian states and increase pressures to self-censor. In their article for the Global Public Policy Institute, Thorsten Benner and Victor Brechenmacher discuss cases that illustrate these dangers and outline remedies for university administrators and faculty. Thoughtful scholars and researchers have already begun assembling a toolkit of best practices to mitigate risks. Based on a review of guidelines issued by academic associations and free-speech groups, the authors identify ten measures that university administrators and faculty can incorporate to mitigate the risk of censorship and surveillance more effectively.
