The COVID-19 pandemic has made online learning a key part of university life. Platforms like Zoom have prevented academic life from grinding to a halt, but they also allow for surveillance by authoritarian states and increase pressures to self-censor. In their article for the
Global Public Policy Institute, Thorsten Benner and Victor Brechenmacher discuss cases that illustrate these dangers and outline remedies for university administrators and faculty.
