Beyond Omicron: COVID’s Viral Evolution

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Dec 20, 2021 | Nature

This article from Nature magazine draws on the views of scientists and research institutions to assess how the SARS-CoV-2 might evolve over months and years. This evolution will determine the nature of the end of the global crisis - whether the virus morphs into another common cold or into something more threatening, like influenza or worse. A global vaccination push that has delivered nearly eight billion doses is shifting the evolutionary landscape, but it remains unclear how the virus will meet this challenge. Scientists who are tracking the effects of the mutations in the variants to date - including Delta and Omicron – warn that as some countries lift restrictions, the opportunities for SARS-CoV-2 to make significant evolutionary leaps, will increase.
