Geopolitics of Health
The political momentum around the need for a responsive health policy brought about by the pandemic, presents the EU with an opportunity to reflect on and develop its global health priorities and capacities, and to facilitate a healthier future across the world in line with the UN SDGs and EU values. In this publication, prepared by the
European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), Virginia Mahieu and Lucie Coatleven investigate the ‘geopolitics of health’ from the perspective of the EU, by illustrating how public health is interlinked across the EU policy ecosystem, focusing particularly on issues relevant to external relations. These include trade and economics, climate and environment, migration, social issues, international cooperation and security. The paper lays the groundwork for discussions about the relationship between geopolitics and health in light of the developments of the last few years
