War and Peace: Supporting Ukraine to Prevail, Rebuild, and Prosper

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Dec 19, 2022 | Open Society Foundations

Ukrainian civil society has demonstrated its maturity as the backbone of Ukraine’s democratic progress and potential EU integration and now - under duress - is a crucial component of Ukraine’s resilience in war. Working with civil society should form the core of a human-centric approach to resilience and recovery suggest Vladyslav Galushko, Iskra Kirova, Inna Pidluska, and Daniela Schwarzer in their article for the Open Society Foundations. Ukraine’s victory would not lie in defeating Russia, but in ensuring that the country emerges as a successful and prosperous European democracy. Reconstruction efforts should seek to “build back better” a modern Ukrainian with a European future. The authors set out recommendations for making Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery effective, just, inclusive, accountable, and sustainable.
