Revitalizing the Struggle for Human Rights
The concept of human rights is not unique to Western culture but rests at the heart of every one of the world’s major ethical traditions, both religious and secular. In this respect, Gareth Evans of the
Global Leadership Foundation identifies eight core principles of action to guide analysis, advocacy, and modes of organization. Embracing these principles will not be the whole story, he suggests, however, because ideas also must be translated into effective action. The point is to emphasize the need for a refocused human-rights narrative, and to argue that all such action would be more effective if underpinned by a common, consistently upheld, set of ideas. To change the world for the better, people must again believe in the possibility of positive change.
