Ukraine: From Emergency Response to Coordinated Long-Term Strategy
President Biden’s visit to Ukraine one year on from Russia’s invasion, reaffirmed the mantra of many Western countries: that they will support Ukraine for “as long as it takes”. Daniel Sleat and Melanie Garson suggest in their article for the
Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, that to give Ukraine more effective and sustainable support and avoid weariness, Western countries need a coordinated strategy that moves beyond just pushing back Russia and focuses on long-term defence. While Western leaders may be firm in their resolve now, the longer the war persists, the greater the chance of fatigue setting in. Ukraine’s allies must move beyond the existing emergency-response approach and towards a united, long-term strategy that delivers victory for Ukraine now and secures its defence for the future. This four-part proposal illustrates how the international community could provide stronger support through clarity, coordination, communication and commitment.
