Ocean Food Production: Limits and Strategies
As the sea covers about 71 percent of the world’s horizontal space and the terrestrial realm 29 percent, much of the productivity of the oceans occurs in the interface between land and sea. Although occupying little space, this area’s productivity is great, particularly in the tropics, suggest Anitra Thorhaug, Ugo Bardi, Sandrine Dixson-Declève
et al in their article for the
Club of Rome. This requires political will at the global level to manage the sea holistically and equitably for all citizens to benefit. An integrated coastal contamination management system, as set forth at the 2022
UN Oceans Decade Conference can add substantially to greater resilience of fisheries and food sources, if properly enforced globally. The authors recommend training in sustainable mariculture practices throughout the world as essential to accelerating the revolution in food production.
