Five New Ways to Promote African Industrialisation

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jun 06, 2023 | ODI

Manufacturing is probably the only proven development model so far that has helped to bring jobs, export revenues and rapid and sustained prosperity to a range of poorer countries. There is little, large-scale manufacturing on the African continent (automobiles in South Africa being a notable exception). In their report for the ODI, Dirk te Velde, Maximiliano Mendez-Parra, Karishma Banga et al warn that unless African countries succeed in actively promoting manufacturing through targeted infrastructure, skills development, financial policy, quality connections with agriculture and services in partnership with the private sector, and preparing for a digital future, significant industrial capacity may never take hold in Africa. The window of opportunity is closing, although some success stories exist, and promising avenues remain.
