Beyond Poverty Alleviation: Envisioning Inclusive Growth in the BRICS Countries
This paper by the
Observer Research Foundation tracks the origins and movements of absolute and relative poverty, and income and wealth inequality, in the BRICS economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa); highlights the associated challenges; and recommends strategies for inclusive growth and sustainable development. Authors Nilanjan Ghosh and Debosmita Sarkar note that although the BRICS countries have witnessed rapid economic growth in the last two decades - surpassing that of the OECD countries - wealth inequality is on the rise and challenges related to relative poverty loom large. Their report recommends that inclusive growth for the BRICS nations can be brought about by addressing ‘inclusive wealth’, delineated by the aggregation of the four forms of capital - physical, natural, human, and social. Only by addressing the four forms of capital can the SDGs be achieved.
