Moving Forward: The Path to a Better Post-Brexit Relationship Between the UK and the EU
In this paper by the
Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Christos Tsoukalis and Anton Spisak advance three reasons for a new debate on Europe. They suggest that the British public is changing views on the UK’s future relationship with the EU, a new economic necessity has arisen and there is a growing need for new cooperation between strategic allies to respond to global challenges. They highlight reasons why this is an appropriate time for a renewed debate; discuss how these considerations should inform the choices ahead; and set out a two-pronged strategy for a future UK government, based on working to improve the Brexit settlement in the short term, while playing a more active role in the future of Europe. Finally, they turn to two practical questions: what is the shared policy agenda that could be pursued in the years to come, and what is a viable political approach?
