Oct 10, 2023 | Intereconomics

There is much uncertainty about the pace ofclimate change, breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and their impact onjobs, and geopolitical strife between the US and China. Yet throughout, it is importantnot to forget about the “known knowns” of adverse demography and increasinglytight labour markets, suggests AntonHemerijck in his article for Intereconomics. These predicaments callfor generous welfare provisions that both protect income and foster employment.Drawing on four chronologically ordered lessons from the recent past, theauthor warns against contrasting here-and-now social protection with future-orientedsocial investment. The former reinforces the latter, and vice versa. Heconcludes with a proposal for the EU to upgrade the carrying capacity of aneffective welfare state in turbulent times.
