The use of nationalism in both China andJapan to consolidate political support for the current leadership makes itdifficult for political leaders to conduct bilateral relations with an economicfocus. Stephen Nagy suggests in his article for the Institute of South-AsianStudies that Japan has wedded its Free and Open Indo-Pacific visionto various initiatives, including the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework(IPEF), to embed itself in the regional political economy. He examines Japan’s widerstrategic priorities, their connection to its relationship with China and the U.S.,and the actions being taken to use the IPEF to advantage. Through the IPEF,Japan hopes to inculcate the U.S. into the Indo-Pacific, build sharedinstitutions and norms, and strengthen its economic synergies with the region
