As China increasingly positioned itself as a global leader and foremostchampion of the Global South, Xi Jinping and other top Communist Partyofficials have been vociferous in their critiques of the U.S.-led internationalorder. Through a bevy of initiatives and proposals - like Xi’s Global SecurityInitiative - Beijing has made clear that it wants to see a wholesale reform ofglobal governance. What this ultimately amounts to is Beijing’s effort toundermine the U.S. global leadership as the U.S.-China rivalry intensifies. Carla Freeman and Lyndi Tsering of the Unites States Institutefor Peace look at how China engages in the U.N. system today, how itapproached this year’s General Assembly, the implications of that approach andhow the United States should respond.
