Accounting for Private Military and Security Actors - Three Considerations for the New Agenda for Peace
Private military and security companies(PMSCs) emerged after the Cold War and their use grew rapidly after theSeptember 11 attacks in 2001. PMSCs are now service providers to governments,international organizations, humanitarian agencies, and private companies inhigh-risk environments. Various international expert bodies and policy expertshave raised concerns about the impact of PMSCs in armed conflict settings andthe rise in human rights and international humanitarian law. NewAgenda for Peace as key peace and security actors given their potential functionsin conflict and post-conflict settings, and their gendered impact. The authors highlightthree considerations for Member States to consider in their deliberationsduring the Summit of the Future in September 2024.
