Although policymakers need an accurate andreliable understanding of how climate change will impact efforts to end extremepoverty, the data available is inadequate and insufficiently transparent toprovide an accurate projection of extreme poverty. In this briefing,
Development Initiatives (DI) explores theWorld Bank's climate change poverty forecasts, discusses the uncertainty around thepotential impact of climate change on extreme poverty and highlights the needfor timely, high-quality data. It demonstrates thatpoverty projections for the next seven years vary significantly, even beforeconsidering the possible impacts of climate change. Given this, and the risk ofnot limiting global warming to 1.5°C, it is imperative that data on bothpresent poverty estimates, and future projected assessments of climatevulnerability are improved.
