Nov 23, 2023 | Intereconomics

Social investment in immigrant inclusionand integration can result in substantial long-term social and economicreturns. In his article for Intereconomics, Holger Bonin discussesseveral potential positive externalities of improving the skills andemployability of immigrants. Research suggests that unfavorable labour marketconditions shortly after of arrival have a significant negative impact on thesubsequent employment trajectory of migrants, as human capital depreciates, andon-the-job learning and the development of professional networks slow down.Social investment in immigrants can have positive externalities for the hostsociety by promoting pro-social outcomes such as social cohesion, trust andtolerance, or by limiting anti-social outcomes such as crime.
