Gen-AI: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jan 18, 2024 | International Monetary Fund

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has thepotential to reshape the global economy, especially labour markets. MauroCazzaniga  FlorenceJaumotte, Longji Li, et alsuggest in their IMF Staff Discussion Note that advancedeconomies will experience the benefits and pitfalls of AI sooner than emergingmarket and developing economies, largely as their employment structure isfocused on cognitive-intensive roles. There are some consistent patternsconcerning AI exposure, with women and college-educated individuals moreexposed, but also better poised to reap AI benefits, and older workerspotentially less able to adapt to the new technology. Labour income inequalitymay increase if the complementarity between AI and high-income workers isstrong, while capital returns will increase wealth inequality.
