Cultural catchphrases, buzzwords and lingo encapsulate the spirit of thetimes. For some, this is reflected in social censors that record sharp,significant or noticeable social changes in daily activities. They aresnapshots of how ordinary Chinese people perceive the changes around them,suggests Lim Tai Wei of the East Asian Institute atthe National University of Singapore. Buzzwords also influence behaviour andconsumer habits. He explains how some catchphrases or buzzwords have acquiredofficial recognition, using a laundry list released by the National LanguageResources Monitoring and Research Centre and disseminated through socialmedia, video comments and online reporting.
